Transforming learning experiences for students and teachers
Student Learning Space
2019
In 2019, I worked with the Ministry of Education (Singapore) to design “Student-to-Student Teacher Interaction” (SSTI) and Study Buddy in the Student Learning Space (SLS).
Student Learning Space is a nation-wide online learning platform that contains curriculum-aligned resources and learning tools for all students in Singapore.
Student Learning Space has won the IDC Smart City Asia Pacific Award in 2018 and WITSA Global ICT Excellence Awards in 2021. Till date, the platform has been successfully deployed to all schools in Singapore, with over 300,000 daily users.
My role in this project includes research, product design (ideation to prototyping), and content strategy.

Goal
Fostering a safe and collaborative learning space for students and teachers.
Many students today view studying as a solitary activity, particularly when revising at home. When faced with challenges, they typically seek help from teachers in class or turn to friends for support; Despite technological advances, most learning still occurs in the classroom.
🤝 How might we create a safe and open learning environment that encourages students to reach out to teachers and peers on a digital platform?
📚 How might we leverage technology to help teachers better manage their classrooms and resources?
🤓 Most importantly, how can we shift the deep-rooted culture of traditional education to change perceptions about digital classrooms?

Research
Understanding how students and teachers interact in the physical classroom.
To understand the challenges students and teachers face daily, we conducted a field study that involved observing and interviewing them about their classroom experiences.

Key insights
Students worry about peer pressure.
Many students feel self-conscious about how their peers perceive them when incorrect answers are visible to the class. In some cases, offering the option to anonymize student identities helps reduce this peer pressure.
Fostering social responsibility is crucial to maintaining a safe and open online environment.
When students post harmful content, it is essential to quickly report and block it to prevent further issues.
Reviewing students’ notes allows teachers to identify potential challenges they may be facing.
Key highlights pinpoint concepts that students find important or struggle with, enabling teachers to quickly address these gaps and allocate more time to reinforce learning.
